Polymarket crypto Up or Down markets: how they work and what wins them

Up or Down markets ask one thing: will a coin finish a short window higher or lower than it started? They settle fast, trade constantly and reward speed — which makes them the easiest markets to measure a trader in, and among the hardest to copy.

What the market asks

Each Up or Down market covers one coin and one fixed window: Up wins if the price at the end of the window is at or above the price at its start, as defined by the market's rules and its resolution source — a price feed named on the market. Windows run from minutes to a day, and new windows open around the clock.

Why the samples are large

Because a market settles within its window, an active trader decides hundreds of them in a month. That makes win rates in this category statistically meaningful quickly — and also makes the lower bound of the confidence interval the right thing to read, because consecutive windows on the same coin are related, not independent.

What decides who wins

Prices in these markets react to the underlying coin in seconds. Makers quote both sides and manage inventory as the coin moves; takers bet on direction from information they act on fast. Crypto markets carry Polymarket's taker fee — the highest category rate in its documentation as of October 2026 — so a taker needs an edge larger than the fee, which is largest for trades near 50¢.

Why they are hard to copy

A window can be minutes long and its price moves with the coin, so the delay between a trader's fill and your copy matters more here than anywhere else. Copy only takers, test at your real latency, and expect a copied edge to shrink. For research rather than copying, tick-level order books and Chainlink settlement prices for these markets are available from our partner OutcomeTick.
